Walney Coastguard until recently was based in the only remaining building of Fort Walney, which is located on the highest part of the Island at 21m above sea level. On a good day it is possible to see beyond the Duddon Estuary and Morecambe Bay toward the Welsh mountains, Scotland and the Isle of Man.
During August of 2002 Walney Coast Guard were in attendance when the 'Naval Bomb Squad' executed a controlled explosion at South Walney, to dispose of a 450mm flare that had been discovered washed ashore, by a member of the Walney public.
