SOLWAY DRIVE - Walney Island

Solway Drive was originally part of of Barrow Corporations Post war estate. No further homes were constructed until during the 1980's when Holbeck Homes Ltd constructed and estate covering: Irwell Road, Silloth Cresent and Allonby Close.

In the late 1980's and early 1990's Leck Construction Ltd purchased the remaining eastern portion of land for it's 'Solway Park Development'. The Solway Park Development was constructed over three phases, simply known as Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3, Solway Drive being spanned over  phase 2 and 3. When Leck houses in Solway Drive were first offered for sale they were described as starter homes and offered for sale at a starting cost of ?37.950, which didn't include; Central Heating, Kitchen and decoration as this was at extra cost. The latter Leck homes constructed on Frome Road were advertised at a cost of ?41.950, but this time they were advertised including Central Heating, Kitchen and decoration at no extra cost...

During the 1970's 'Refuse Collection' industrial action, land between Cows Tarn Lane and the North East Corner of Solway Drive was given over as a temporary refuse dump up until industrial action by the refuse collectors could be resolved. The corner in question can be seen as it is today (2003) in the picture above, although now much is now covered by the raising of Solway Drive itself...
