KITCHENER STREET - Walney Island

Kitchener Street forms part of the 'Isle of Walney Estates Company' Vickerstown Estate constructed between 1900 and 1904. It takes it's name from the Boer War General.

General Viscount Lord Horatio Herbert Kitchener (1850 - 1916):

From late 1899 Lord Kitchener was Chief of staff to Lord Roberts, taking over as commander in chief in December 1900. His responsibilities included conducting the British forces during the Boer guerrilla campaign. He was became a major figure of the First World War when he was awarded the position of 'Secretary of State for War'. A position he was to hold until his untimely death during 1916 when his ship, HMS Hampshire, struck a mine and his body never being discovered was declared 'Lost at sea'.
